Equilibrium – "Turis Fratyr" Released: 15th February 2005 Equilibrium, a melodic Black Metal band that saw the light of the Metal world not very long ago (summer of 2001). Now, four years after they began, their debut album “Turis Fratyr” has arrived. Those four years were definitely worth the waiting. As I just saw a copy of their 2003 demo being sold at the Dutch version of Ebay for 51 euros, Equilibrium certainly hasn’t failed in putting down a great debut album. Starting off the album is the titlesong “Turis Fratyr” itself. This song is a 30 second intro which directly flows into the second song “Wingthors Hammer”. It immediately is proof of the bombastic and melodic atmosphere of Equilibrium’s music. As is the song “Heimdalls Ruf”, which reallty provokes a medieval atmosphere. As my German is not very good, I can only guess the meaning of the lyrics, by the words I know, and of course the song’s title. Thus far I’ve only managed to figure out what the next song “Unter der Eiche” means, and of course “Met”, but that song speaks for itself. Back to the music, “Unter der Eiche” is the best song on the album, starting with a slow 45-second intro, then blending into a faster bit, and to top things off, blending into a faster chorus again. With great melodies and a good variety in speed as I just described, I think that this is the most versatile song on the album. “Der Sturm” follows perfectly in the footsteps of the previous song. With another handful of decent riffs and up-tempo percussion this is another good song, perfectly fitting the Equilibrium album. Another great song worth mentioning is “Met”, probably the most hilarious song on the album, without damaging the quality of music with it. The song speaks for itself, I guess, and I recommend everyone to at least give it a try ;-). All in all “Turis Fratyr” is a great debut album, as I haven’t seen many of lately. It combines the bombastic atmosphere of the music with great melodies and up-tempo guitar work. It definitely is recommendable to all fans of metal, as it is a mixture of many different genres. Recommendable songs: “Unter der Eiche” & “Die Prophezeiung” Rating: 7.5/10 Review by Rhoutna |
