Insense – "Soothing Torture"

Released: June 2005, Black Balloon Records

Soothing Torture is the title of Insense’s second full-length studio album. It brings a variety of fast riffs and blasting drum beats. This CD is not one which you can digest at once, I’ve listened to it quite a number of times now, and only now can I really judge anything about this CD.

The album starts with a beautiful grand-piano intro, and an interesting thing about that is, that it’s the unedited test version. Originally it was not meant to be on this album, just to test out the new studio equipment. As the intro, called “Helplessness” swiftly turns into an arrangement of heavy guitars with a blasting atmosphere, after about one minute playing time, the style of music becomes visible (or “hearable”).The second song, “Making up for lost Time” follows in the footsteps of the previous song perfectly, and continues the building up of a great sound. It has a good and catchy main riff, and the solo is not so bad either. As the third song “I, Deviant” begins, I hear the first minor downside to this album. I do not like the way blasting loud parts are followed by soft parts in which the drums are a lot less present and the vocals do not come out very good. And this is repeated quite a number of times. On the other hand, “Gasping for Air” has a great intro which consists of a steady rhythm riff followed by an harmonic interlude. After having listened a couple of songs, the CD starts to look like its not very versatile more and more. The song “Constriction” shows quite a lot of resemblance to the previous songs, and it’s actually not really worth while mentioning anything special about it. “The Forgiving Embrace” follows, also not very special, though it’s an average track. The beginning of the titlesong makes me think of a nu-metal band, but not more than 10 seconds, then the actual music kicks in. As I’m getting closer to the end of the album the last song worth mentioning is “Fallout”, which is a mixture of fast guitar and drum work, mixed with screaming vocals.

All in all “Soothing Torture” is decent, with some minor downsides every now and then. I wouldn’t advise anyone to run to the stores to buy the album immediately, though if you like Death Metal and get a chance to listen to Insense, make sure you give them a chance, as the music in itself is definitely not bad.

Recommended songs are: “Making up for lost Time” and “Fallout”
