Satariel – "Hydra"

(Regain Records / release date: 27th June 2005)

After someone had mentioned "Satariel“ as a band with some skilled musicians, it attached a certain importance to me to get the promo of this album to review it and to be able to find my own opinion about it. So, here I`m listening to this album the 5th time now and it is a challenge in every way.
Because this band really doesn´t fit in any of the usual drawers of Metal. Even though “Satariel” often are said to be a Thrash-or Death Metal band, I´d say they are non of it, there´s just more to it.
Right away the first track of the album “The Freedom Call” reminds me of the style of Primordial’s new album… but of course only very slightly, as “Satariel” really have their own origin style of making music. Okay, the album indeed does contain some Death- and Thrash- Metal elements, but otherwise it is a mixture of passionated melodies and compositions on one hand, and of aggressive and particularly tortured and sometimes even sad mid-pitched vocals on the other hand. But it always preserves a good balance of slightly growling and often clear singing.
Whilst the second song „Be you angel, be you beast“ has a rather melancholic touch (with some break-throughs of energetic raw sound passages) the third track “Claw the clouds” is more a hammerblow. The guide melody is very catchy  and the lead guitar plays some exciting solos during the singing breaks. In this track you really get a taste of the very origin and extraordinary style of “Satariel”, which is in a way typical for the band, but undescribable with words, despite that it really rocks.
For fans of raw Black- or Death Metal this album really is NOT advisable. But those of you who like it more melodic and full of fresh and new ideas in the compositions should give it a try. But you have to give the album 4 or 5 runs at least to be able to grasp everything and to take in all the subtle details to impress you.
„Vengeance is hers“ definitely is the strongest song on the album. I really need to ask the band in detail about this song in an interview one day, as it seems that the lyrics are about rapists or how the people handle this subject. But not only lyrically, but also musically this track is one of the most intense ones > driving bass and drum sounds, accompanied by great exciting guitar riffs and devoted singing full of passion…
The lyrics of the other songs in general seem to concern topics like the will of mankind, based upon okkult subjects (as vocalist Pär has studied okkult traditions and magic for several years). The texts analyse if everything in life is destiny or not, or if it´s God or Satan making the rules. Thus the rest of the songs also almost bubble over with energy.
Everybody has to decide for himself, if he can live up to this. On one hand this music really is difficult to digest, on the other hand it is an experience of a different kind, as the style of this music (as I said before) is different from everything else on the music market these days. This album is worth a recommendation for people who are always keen to experiment.
Recommended tracks: “Vengeance is hers” and “The Springrise”.
