Gorgoroth - "Twilight of the Idols"
(Nuclear Blast, 2003)
A
tasty disc for all dedicated Black Metal fans! Gorgoroth have always stood for
quality and originality
in BM… and now they are living up to this reputation. The louder you listen to
this CD, the better it is, in my opinion.
This means, it is not as brutal as I would have expected it from this band (probably
my expectations were too exagerated),
but anyway this CD is a class better than those of many other bands (Gorgoroth
simply belong to the absolute elite,
even if, as I said, I miss the last little bit of spice
on this record). The first track “Procreating Satan” starts at full
blast,
there`s no warm up phase for getting used to it, it punches powerfully along and
ends just as abruptly. The second track
is just as short and imposing, before you finally notice a sort of song building
up in the 3rd track (“Exit through carved
stones”) > intro, then an increasing muttering and moaning, accompanied by
straight forward guitars, which here do
not hurt so extremly, but actually contain a few melodic riffs, but inspite of
everything of course covered in satanic
moods, … followed by a slow and dark break, which reaches a furious, demonic
crescendo.
The
lyrics are not printed in the booklet, but this (at least for the 4th
track “Teeth grinding”) is not at all necessary. There has
never before been such a clear diction in a background to a song. And in this
way the satanic texts continue through
the whole record in the usual Gorgoroth way, and they provide satisfaction for
those listeners,
who come to life when they hear such lyrics. The further course of this album is
solid BM, which is very enjoyable,
because the CD offers a lot of variety. No song is alike any other. Some really
talented songwriters have done a
great job here. That`s why this CD belongs into every well-arranged
BM collection!

track: “Of Ice and Movement”.
