Dark Funeral - „Attera Totus Sanctus“
Regain Records, release date: 24th October 2005
The
24th of October 2005 was a glorious day for the Black Metal scene,
because after too many Death- and Thrash- Metal releases we were flooded with in
the past weeks, on the 24th several wicked BM releases were unleashed
upon the world (1349, etc.). By a wide margin Dark Funeral’s “Attera Totus
Sanctus” for sure is the best of all those albums. A masterpiece of Satanic
Black Metal from the grand masters of Swedish BM on whose album qualities you
can always rely.
It´s a damn rare event that I like an album at the first go. But with this
release it happened! I was hooked on it after the first listening.
Already the cover artwork of “Morbid” Daniel Valeriani predicts BM at its
finest…. and exactly that’s what is offered on “Attera Totus Sanctus”
(“Destroy everything holy”). Right away the first track will blow the fuse.
“King Antichrist” is a pure glorification of Satan. Also the whole song
construction is supreme. With emotional growling and hammerblow-great and fast
guitar riffing the homage to Satan is drummed into the listener’s brain.
The 3 follow-up tracks (including the great title track “Attera totus
sanctus”) will pull you into an undertow of passion and fascination on darkest
level with its aggressive and thrilling drum sound plus riffs and with its
evil-hysterical growling-singing.
The music on this album is deeply stirring, lyrically as well as musically.I
probably don`t have to mention that the recording / sound quality of this album
is of excellent quality! A real pleasure to listen to!
The 5th track “Atrum Regina” so far is the ultimate highlight of
the album. This song breaks upon us with a brute force that just makes you
addicted to it unrestrained. I can hardly wait to hear this song live on the
tour in March 2006 (with Naglfar and Endstille). That’s gonna be a real event.
I can already imagine all those 600 concert visitors (that Munich usually has)
banging their heads off in rage.
While some other bands are only able to turn out the evil in their music only by
monotonous loud noise and non-compromising lack of melodies, it´s different
with Dark Funeral. In their music the diabolical gets awakened by the abandoning
within the songs, even if that means to have a dedicated melodic background with
passionated guitar sounds in a track. The mood in the songs is not created by
feelingless coldness, but by a lot of emotions… warm and deep-darkened
feelings for Satan`s lecture… a dedicated passion to see all Christianity
dissapear. And this feeling is transferred to the listener. You can`t escape the
spell of the great songwriting, faultless instrumentation and playing,
outstanding growling and singing and imaginative riffing. This album contains
not one single gap-filler, every track is brutally great stuff. Of course Dark
Funeral stayed loyal to their principles never to get slower with a new album.
At the beginning of 2006 they will be touring some countries with Naglfar and
Endstille, which is a fantastic package. Besides recommending you to go and see
one of those gigs I advise you to buy the “Attera Totus Sanctus” album.
Finally with this CD there`s one more album on the market that’s 100 % worth
the money.
