Impaled Nazarene - „Pro Patria Finlandia“
Osmose Productions, release date: March 28, 2006
‘Pro Patria Finlandia’ is the latest offering from this well known Finnish five piece, now in their sixteenth year. Impaled Nazarene needs no introduction. As with past albums they have released, ‘Pro Patria Finlandia’ has caused more than a little controversy with, for example, the band recently being censored in France.
Picking up where 2003’s
‘All That You Fear’ left off, ‘Weapons To Tame A Land’ launches the
listener headfirst straight into fast-paced black metal with Slutti666 (Mika
Luttinen)’s familiar vocals (and broken English.) No fancy synth intros here!
A common trend again
rearing its head, as expected by anyone by now, is the fact that the album
contains a song about goats – this time, ‘Goat Sodomy’. Timing at 2:22,
its one of the most memorable tracks on the album, with Slutti666 appearing
barely to pause for breath for the first 1:25. A good solid riff accompanies
vocalized parts of the song.
The early riff of ‘For Those Who Have Fallen’ reminds me of Barathrum albeit
at a faster, more manic pace. Yet there is nothing else that really stands out
about this song, other than that it grows repetitive. This song, for me, is not
the strongest on the album – that is by no means to say it is bad, however,
because the album as a whole is very strong.
‘This Castrated World’, track nine, is very melodic in Impaled Nazarene’s
own special way. This is one track I hope they don’t exclude from upcoming
live setlists! There is definitely still a punk attitude alive within the band.
The lyrical content is basically the standard Impaled Nazarene stuff – raping,
killing, fucking, whores… some of these at the same time. The subject of war
is also tackled as usual.
The album lacks any kind of ‘thanks’ or ‘greets’ list. One can only
assume that the band photo in the middle of the album sleeve, an image showing
four of the five band members offering a middle finger salute, to be a testament
to the countless individuals behind the scenes who helped Impaled Nazarene
complete and release this, their tenth album in a successful and eventful
sixteen year career.
