Ekove efrits – "The wraiths of forgotten forest"

Evil distribution - Release date:Februar 5, 2006

Sometimes I find in my letterbox promos of artists whose name sound totally unmeaningly to me, but then the design of cover and booklet exert such a powerful attraction on me that I must listen to the album right away. This happened with this recording. It is namely “only” a “demo” but it was delivered with a real glossy booklet and all. It is limited to only 150 pieces, so it might be difficult to get a copy.
There is a warning on the cover saying “Depressive Black Metal”, and the cover shows a forlorn landscape in the dark with a crumbled house in the background. In the foreground hyenas lacerate a cadaver. The whole booklet is kept in black and white colours but lavishly ornated with golden letters. I guess the artist wanted to support his art with appealingly visuals. There is a photo of the artist in the booklet, too, showing him standing alone between trees, and a lot of nonacceptance is written all over his face.

The album starts with the whooshing of the ocean, but admittedly it doesn’t sound like “holiday at the ocean” but like threatening fury of the elements. Some very melancholic and heartrending sounds from a piano join. This extends to a piece of music that totally lulls you with soft pitches, but at the same time you feel dim forebondings about this album becoming much more frightening and hopeless with each song.
During the second track “The end of holy torments” the mental inferno breaks out. Chasing riffs and threatening melody lines teach you some awing. Again and again there are surprising settings which interrupt the flow of the music with certain noises or a deep-pitched voice talking, all this injecting a dose of fear into your mind. This song is also causing fear as you know that only someone with massive depressions or other missenses can write such dark-seething music, creating such menacing moods.
The third album track “The whispers of lost souls” can even improve upon. Herein the melody lines become more slow and dragging until it has reached a level whose melancholy and resignation you can’t describe with words.
The lyrics seem to be about hate towards life, towards some religions… it is not possible to get a complete insight as some lyrics are in Persian language (oh yes, this artist is from Iran, which makes the whole record an extremely special and rare piece, of course).
Actually I think I have to warn mentally weak people from this music. Forget about bands like Shining, their music isn’t half as dangerous as Ekove Efrit’s psycho-output (speaking about the music, not the lyrics, though). With “The wraiths of forgotten forest” I really see the possibility of making depressive people feeling even more lost in this world. There is this deep-pitched speaking voice again and again which sounds so daunting  (even if you can’t understand what is said) that you feel nothing but mortal anxiety and inferiority. Like the voice of a demon that is inside your head, demanding the self-destruction of a miscarried existence.

So this album is really bizarr but at the same time it is unbelievably splendid art. There are so many ideas that have never before been used, wherewith the artist expresses his trauma… it just pulls you into an undertow of the most dark night created by the artist’s emotions.
Even if you usually do not listen to this subgenre of Black Metal, while listening to this one you will be absorbed by this morbid aberation and the musical manifestation of the demons reigning inside the artist’s head.
The album contains 6 long tracks, finalized by the unbelievable, unique pensive-beautiful track “Mourning in my funeral” which cannot be described with words, as it is so outstanding.
Only for morally firm people! And a quiet tip for fans of the genre!
