This
MCD is a reissue of the former 7“ edition limited to 666 copies. In proper
style this new issue is nicely designed , coming in a black smearproof board (yeah,
no dabs will stick to the material). When unfolding, the first photo you see is
one of band-founding member Infernus, who states about himself in the credits:
“Infernus appears curtesy of Satan”. Next photo you see when taking out the
disc is one of the incredible Pest, one of the former vocalists of Gorgoroth,
whereby you’ll know what to expect vocalwise: Pest’s devilish screeching and
shrieking which has set the pattern for BM vocals in his active period.
The MCD, just like the original 7”, contains only two songs: “Revelation of
doom” (starting with terrible distortion) and “Ritual” (recorded live in
Bergen 1996, of course, as the CD-title says). But these two tracks are adequate
to make you catch a glimpse of the atmosphere of the BM gigs during that time.
The recording quality is terrible as expected and full of hissing. Pest screams,
screaks and brays exzessively. Yeah, that’s how raw, brutish and coarse
satanic Black Metal has been at that time.
Those who are old enough and have experienced those gigs will enjoy to hear it
again and might feel like the clock is turned back for a few minutes.
And those who are too young and have missed it will get a pertinent impression
of the beginning days and how the former Gorgoroth made their fans’ hearts
beat faster.
So
this MCD is a must-have for all long-time Gorgoroth fans as well as for
collectors and for fans of the very primal BM, which did hurt in the ears and at
the same time did the ears good.
It’s not for newcomer-Gorgoroth-fans who know only the latest albums.
Those probably can’t do anything with this thoroughgoing stuff.
Score:
for the cultic factor: 10 out of 10 points
for the recording quality: 3 out of 10 points
for the cover: 7 out of 10 points
for
the songs/songwriting: 9 out of 10 points
for the vocal performance: 10 out of 10 points
totalized: 8 out of 10 points
