This
was the surprise of this year for me so far. You really have to remember this
band name, if you’re into Black Metal!
Jocke Kristensson, who normally plays drums in “Thyrfing”, and Dennis Ekdahl
of “Raise Hell” attempted their own BM project, and the result really is
phenomenal.
You get nothing but dark, grim and moribund Black Metal with tortured vocals by
Jocke (I really was pleasantly surprised by his frostbitten deep-pitched voice
and singing ability, I hadn´t expected this from someone who usually “only”
plays drums).
Right
the first track “Doomsdaylight” comes over you like a thunderstorm filling
the blackened sky. Those noises in the beginning of the album remind me of
horror-movie scenes with victims getting eaten alive. Right after this
“introduction” you get confronted with an evil broading atmosphere within a
proper composition, solid drumming, merciless growling vocals and the guitar
sound assist this gloomy atmosphere.
This scenery of brutal bleakness is continued in the second song “Bleed your
wounds”, before it get´s even harsher and sterner with the 3rd
track (and my favourite from this album) “Season of huge mortality”. This
track is above average in many respects. The drumming is wild and dominant, and
the trown-in riffs and the growling bring to mind some sort of post-apocalyptic
scene (or pre-apocalyptic of course, as I don´t understand the lyrics here, I
can´t tell you). I could listen to this track again and again…. it´s really
the most brutal track here and I just can´t get enough of it.
“Daughter of chaos” with its mid tempo thrilling riffing is even a bit
dramatic, but it doesn´t get overpowering, so it´s still according to my
taste.
Once more it gets crushing and
spiteful with “Words of prey” and the first part of the album is brought to
a close with passionated drumming, sometimes powerful, slightly melodic gloomy
tunes in the background and savage vocals.
The
second part of the album contains 2 songs from „Rutthna“s very first demo
production called „Decomposing eve” (which were of a rather mediocore
recording quality, and a third track was not released back at that time, because
Jocke wasn´t 100% satisfied with it), so it was really about time for a
remastering. These 2 tracks are real hammerblows – raw, primitive BM with deep
low-pitched growling vocals.
There are some rough beats in the middle part of the 5:19 minutes long “The
fifth angel”, which comes across interesting and slightly death-melodic. The
lyrics are about the apocalypse and the last days on earth, inspired by the
biblical story of the 5th angel. Again and again you´re drawn into
the music by the raw and depressing
atmosphere of the song… and especially by the drum-work, which gets your blood
pumping.
“Evolution´s end” doesn´t come across as quite so powerful and crushing,
but it also has a few good, new ideas and in this way it offers a fantastic
contrast to the usual things in the Black Metal scene.
I for one would be more than delighted if this band got the chance to play live.
I´m sure they would kick ass mercilessly. Thumbs up for Rutthna!
If you don´t like this, you don´t like Black Metal!
