“rumours and lies” or something like that… there`s the story about the
Norwegian security police, reading Bathory lyrics to see if any of those lyrics
could have inspired people to burn down churches in Norway! And of course 99 %
of all those kids in Norway and the press and Swedish or Scandinavian Black
Metal wave are Bathory influenced! But that doesn´t mean… ähm… I wasn´t
writing lyrics saying “It`s okay to kill people” or “Burn down churches”!
Whatever you do… whether it`s having sex with a donkey, or eating a dead rat,
or burning down a church.. it`s up to YOU! But there`s a consequence to
everything that we do! And don`t try to make yourself a better guitar player or
a more genuine Black Metal vocalist for something that doesn`t have anything to
do with music! Make an interesting song! Make an interesting record! Then we can
talk…
Look
at the first Bathory album for instance! It cost us 400 DM (( = 200 Euros )) to
record, 20 years ago, in a garage, 8
tracks, no digital equipment, 56 hours, 2 colors on the album cover… the album
is 28 or 26 minutes long, and it`s still selling! Between 25 and 50 000 copies
every year! That album alone, those 26 minutes, 56 hours, recording 8 tracks…
by 3 shit kids in a garage 20 years ago… is still paying my rent! So the MUSIC
is the more important thing! You will be judged by your music! Not by how many
negros you kill!

think that… whenever we have an interview scheduled, they think they`re gonna
call Satan`s son or something like that, or that I`m gonna be screaming across
phone. I´ve been doing this for a very long time … when new bands form up
today and they have leather from top to toe and
make-up in their face and they drink blood and, you know, … specially
signed guitars and bombs and everything …
ähm…. they are going to develop too!
It`s 5 or 6 years … they´re gonna ask themselves: “Okay, so what am
I, BEYOND the make up?”.
I´ve
been doing this for 20 years! If I would still have those leather pants with
nails on and drink all that pig`s blood… that would be me, not having changed
one bit in 20 years! If you have lived or done something for 20 years and you
haven`t learned anything about yourself… then really, you can NOT be a very
interesting musician or a songwriter or an artist in any form! There are so many
of those bands who used to wear make-up 5 or 6 years ago and they`re taking off
their make-up now… even Slipknot were taking off their masks! … which is not
bad… it just shows, that they are growing … they are developing! There is
something called evolution! And when people see pictures of me in all those big
magazines and I have a jeans jacket and a baseball cap …when I come to record
stores and Bathory fans come up to me and they look at me and they go: “Are
you Quorthon of Bathory?” and I say “Ja!”
and they look at me and I have jeans, sneakers and
a T-Shirt, they go: “I would never think, you wear jeans, sneakers and
T-Shirt!” and I go: “So, what do you expect?

Well, that`s also one of those rumours, that I never make interviews! And I make
between 100 and 200 interviews every year! If you look on the internet, you get
400 000 hits on the word Bathory! And only one third is for the countess Bathory!
There are still quite a number of interviews on the net! But unfortunately 75 %
of all those interviews are … they`re according me wrong! So I´m afraid a lot
of interviews are not very… ähm… that`s not something that I would like to
do very much in the future … so I´m very happy for this website, and the
people who have been working on this website, because that means that we can put
a lot of information out there without having to go through the magazines… or
other websites!

No, actually it`s because people are pretty so much emphasized on the importance
of the name! I mean, I could give you my real name now, but it still wouldn`t
make my music sound any different! So for as long as people keep on asking, they´re
gonna get all those stupid shit names! It’s when they stop asking… that the
name doesn`t mean anything anymore … then it doesn`t have any value to it!
It`s like a striptease > you see a girl taking her clothes off for 25 minutes
… and if she would just standing there all naked > then, what`s the fun!? A
good striptease is a good striptease… but a girl that`s just coming in all
naked … it´s just a naked girl…. you can see that on a swedish beach every
day! So the fun is in the PROCESS of …. !
Every
third interview people are still asking me about my real name… each and every
one of them think “I´m gonna get the name”… so of course I´m planning
all these puns! Whenever there`s a journalist “Okay, you can tell me, I´m not
taping anymore!” and I go
“Sure!”…

It`s for the fun and it`s also for the revenge, because some of those people are
really going through really long measures to trying to …. for instance there
was this French guy who was calling a studio, where we had recorded an album,
and he called there with the only one intention … and the intention was to try
to figure out my real name! But the problem was, the guy he was talking to, he
knew me, and he knows all about this name business! So he gave him a folly name!
And the french guy believed in it and he printed it into the magazine… and it
was just a Bogus-name! And still 10 years later I´m being asked the question
“Is this your name?” and I go “Buy the swedish dictionary, stupid …”!
So it`s playing a trick.. it`s like “Schlagsahne mit, you know, Apfelstrudel
oder ohne Apfelstrudel!” … “Semmelknödel”… you could give any stupid
German name to an American and say this is the real name of any German person,
because it sounds like a German name… because it`s a German word. And we come
up with all these stupid Swedish words, that really don´t mean anything! And
people still believe in it, because they’ve read it somewhere on a website. So
of course it`s kind of a little revenge as well! Because people are still
putting so much value to a name .. it`s when people stop asking me, then the
name doesn`t have any value anymore!

with me. But if you download 60000 files and 200 albums …one of my best
friends has never bought a CD in his whole life … all his CDs are downloaded
MP3 CDs! And I´m trying to tell him: somebody WROTE that music! Somebody
recorded that music, played on it! A regular, ordinary studio will cost you 200
Euros…

yeah, per day! Or some studios in Sweden …. for instance the studio we are
using costs me 300 Swedish crowns ((=30 Euros)) per hour… and it can end up
with 40/ 50 Euro per hour. And we can be in the studio for 3 or 4 months! And
then you can recognize, we are spending a quarter of a million Swedish crowns
just to record! And then you have 10000 crowns just for the films, for the
cover! And then you have people working, then you have people transporting the
records to the distributors….
….
everything, you know, it costs a lot of money! Before a record hits the street,
it can cost anything from 200.000 Swedish crowns to 1 million! And that`s not
just Bathory! It`s MOST records! 80 % of all the records released, whether it`s
Black Metal or Britney Spears pop or anything will not give any profit, only 20
% of all the records released worldwide by all the record companies will give
some kind of a profit! And those 20 % records will have to pay for the remaining
80 % records, that didn´t give the profit! And if everybody starts downloading
music or burn their CDs from a friend, using computer, in 10 or 15 years from
now you would only have ONE mega record company, who`s main profits comes not
from the music but from oil industries or movies or from anything else! And you
will only have one artist, Britney
Spears copies! So, if you really want to kill a band, the best way to do it, is
to copy their music! So, if you think, you are 100 % underground “Yeah, I´m
an underground-fan… I hate the record companies, they just take my money…
but I want the music…”, so the best way you can do it is, to kill those band
and their labels, is to download their music! The record companies are always
gonna get their money from somewhere else. But the bands > that`s their
income-source! That`s their chance to make another record in 6 months or one
year!
So
many bands, young bands, Swedish bands, that I`ve known of, have only got to
make 2 or 3 albums and they only sell between 3000 or 5000 or 6000 or 7000
records, and that`s just enough to cover the studio costs and all the advances
that they have been taking before the record starts to give some profit! With
Bathory albums I don`t have to worry about things like that, because
automatically whenever there`s a new Bathory album, we have 50.000 copies in
advance orders, which means before an album is released, we have paid all the
studio costs and everything, so everything that comes in, is just a profit. And
that profit we put back into Bathory to make another album!
So,
downloading 1 or 2 tracks to check a band out > perfect! This is a very good
tool for that! But there`s a generation of people out there who just downloads
music 24 hours a day, and never buys anything! And they even, you know, produces
their own bootlegs! I know Brazil is a very good country for producing bootlegs!
80 % of all the Bathory bootlegs out there are produced in Brazil, and used with
modern digital computer technology.

because YOU don`t have any money! Why not be 100 % a human being and stand up
for your right, when you`re saying “I want to have that music, but I can`t pay
for it. Why don´t I wait until I have the money to pay for that music and then
I can enjoy that music with my whole heart!” Instead of sitting in my
little shitty apartment, thinking ”Oouuh, I downloaded it for free!”
And you`re sitting there, and you`re enjoying it for free, but the person who
gave you that art, you´re robbing him of his life stock… of his art, you´re

CD… well, look in your apartment, you probably have 200 or 300 CDs
… if you don`t buy that Hamburger or those sneakers or go to see that
movie… save your money! And then buy that CD! Don`t steal it from the person

Well, I´m against the whole culture of stealing music. I´m not against
internet or MP3s or downloading 2 or 3 songs as a promotion for an unsigned
band. A Polish band who may not be able to record an album, can put MP3s on
their website… and everybody in Japan, America, Sweden, Germany, on the
planet, can download these MP3s and spread it around. And that`s the people`s
promotion channels. They don`t have to go to a record company and buy that CD,
but if that band is talked about enough, then maybe some label somewhere will
pick them up and say “Hey, you guys are great! You should be able to record an
album.” and so record an album. Internet can give you an opportunity to show
yourself and your art! And just because you`re making an album and you´re proud
of your music, you shouldn`t have 50.000 people just copiing that record and not
paying for it.
Because
if we would treat everything else in life like that, everything that gives us
substance > food, water, shelter, love, clothes, anything… if we would take
all of that for free, you would have complete anarchie. And absolutely nothing
would work! You wouldn`t have a telephone to talk through, you wouldn´t have
internet to put your webzine on, you wouldn´t have clothes to put on you,
…somebody made those clothes, some factory was organized, some cotton was
planted somewhere in order to make fabriques. You couldn`t even have a slice of
bread! Somebody was working very hard to provide you with that slice of bread!
So that`s what life is all about… to be proud of the things you do! Not to be
proud of “Yeah, I downloaded it for free!”. 2 or 3 songs > okay! But not
an entire album! I have never in my life downloaded even ONE MP3! Not because I
haven`t the money to buy the CD, but because I couldn´t live with myself,
knowing that I own something that I didn´t pay for.. I didn`t do it right! We
all have to live with our shame, and if we are okay with having our hearts sold
with a shame and not doing what`s right, then…. so be it!

bands are using 200 digital tracks, but when we record, we just use 14 tape
tracks, because I cannot cope with computers in the studio! I want to have the
tape machine rolling. And I don`t care if it sounds bad or if it`s old school!
But that`s the only way it has to be.

You know, nowadays we have condoms that tastes strawberry! And I was asking a
lady once: “Hey, is it because it`s strawberry taste? Would it have been okay
with any other taste?” and I was just laying there, watching her, thinking:
“Hm… are you thinking STRAWBERRY right now, or are you thinking ME?”…
and “Are you horny, or are you hungry?”
That`s
just one of those things… when I was a teenager and we would have frequent sex
in the rock clubs every night, you would have a condom that was nutural, and if
there would be a condom around with strawberry or chocolate taste, or whatever,
or lemon, … that wouldn´t be the same! So I´m not hanging on to the 21st

Ähm… yeah, you can either pick german or french as a second international
language. For 3 or 4 years it`s … “obligatorisch” ((=compulsory)). And
then I went to school after ordinary school for 2 or 3 years, because I wanted
to read original manuscript by Beethoven and Wagner, because I thought, I can`t
read that in Swedish or in English, because it wouldn`t be the same! And I
realised, German and Swedish is basically .. it`s not the same language, but
it`s the same language group. Today it`s completely different,
you can talk to somebody who lives in Rumuinia, and that person will
speak rather good English. But in those days you would have fanzines writing to
you in German, saying “Sorry, I don´t speak English” and you would try to
answer in German, and probably everything was wrong! But nowadays everybody
speaks English.

California radio stations, when Nordland came out, and because they are far
behind us… it was like 3 o’clock in the morning for me… perfect time for
them…but it was like: “So, Quorthon, here´s the new album, what do you
think about it!?”… “chchchchch” … ((*Quorthon imitating the noise of
snoring *))… it was 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning for me…

you know… to have something to laugh about… I don´t know! Because when they
talk to me, all they concentrate about is controversies and lies.

than believing in some of the rumours they hear down the local gay bars or
something! So, yeah, of course, I mean, as long as people stay in touch or, you
know, make sure that they are updated about the news and things like that, they
can just easily announce their interest in having some kind of an interview. Or
we decide, we´re not gonna make anymore interviews because we have lost all our
respect for the media anyway! And they can just pick the information from the
website! Probably there`s gonna be a 10 000 words long interview on the website
when the new album comes out anyway! And then I´m not gonna have to call 200
different journalists, who only keep on asking me “Is it true that you drink
blood?” So… we have to think about that…

the room right now, I wouldn´t be the least excited! Because I know, that there
is absolutely no difference between them and a mother of five, or a
supermarket-cashier. They are working just as much as well, but they never
receive the attention. They don´t even receive 1 % of the appreachiation!
In
the other house where I live there is a mother, who is divorced, she has 3 kids,
she has to wake them up every morning, prepare breakfast, take one kid to
kindergarten, 2 kids to school, and then work for 6 hours every day. And take
care of the kids, take care of the house, and she still isn’t making enough
money to pay all their rent, so she has to take money from the state. And she
never gets apprechiation for the stuff that she makes!

Well, I go to one show every five years or something like that! But not because
I want to, but… *laughs * … the last show I went to, I only went to this
show because a friend of mine was going on a double date! It`s a stupid story…
but… I went to this show because this girl was gonna be there anyway, and I
promised, that I would go on this double date! So after the show ...well, we did
what boys and girls usually do, but that was the first show in five years for
me! Some not very interesting concerts at all > the music sucks, the
lightning sucks, the sound sucks, the audience sucks… everything is not what
it`s like when you listen to a record! Music is for the record, it`s not for
performances! That`s my personal opinion! And whenever a Bathory fan asks me
“When you`re gonna go on tour?” I say “First… who`s gonna be on stage?
Me and a friend of mine and 2 computers playing whatever?” Who`s gonna do the
backing vocals? Some tracks have 6 or 8 guitars! Who the hell is gonna play
these guitars!? Which songs should we play? Do you want a viking song or a BM
song??

Well, sometimes when people ask me: “When are you going to play?” I say:
“I play with myself every night!” …but that`s probably not what you`re
thinking about! ((*common laughter *)) ……NO!!!……. Bathory is the virgin
you will never sleep with! Because everybody has their own idea, what a Bathory
show is about! And everytime when
people are e-mailing me and say: “Oh, a Bathory show could be so exciting…
you know… bombs, and flying drums and horses running by and blablabla…”
